I helped a private tutor set up a website. The image shows the first draft, and he was so pleased that he happily said, “Finally, I have a home of my own — no more being exploited by agencies!” The metaphor of a “home” was especially fitting.
A few weeks ago, he heard that I build websites and said he wanted one for himself too, asking me to teach him. “As long as you’re willing to learn, why not?” I replied. Being able to pass on what I know to someone eager to learn is actually a kind of happiness.

While we talked, I learned that he had always relied on agencies to connect him with students. Tutoring fees that he was charging are already not high. Yet the agencies still took hefty commissions. The time and effort he put in were completely disproportionate to his income. He felt very helpless about it. That’s why he decided it was time to become independent and reduce his reliance on agencies as much as possible.
Registering a domain name, installing a content management system, setting up cybersecurity, and integrating traffic analytics systems. After being discouraged by one after another, he eventually asked me to take full charge of building the website.
Marketing has always been a challenge for self-employed individuals, freelancers, and small businesses. For independent operators with limited resources, it is especially daunting.
A website may not be the entirety of marketing, but it is a place where a brand, a profession, and an image can truly settle down. In the noisy and chaotic world of social media content, having a “home that shelters you from the wind and rain” has become incredibly important.
Set up a website is essential. Even if one day social media suddenly suspends your account for no reason, you won’t feel anxious — because you still have a warm and sturdy “home” to rely on.
